The Cygnets room is a large, light and airy room, and covers the majority of the ground floor. The children are aged 2½ to 3½, and we can hold to 16, with a ratio of 1 adult to 6 children.
There is a relaxed atmosphere in this room, which helps new children. The room follows a routine based on the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage, and strongly encourages learning through play. Independence is also encouraged to allow the children to develop their full potential.
Children participate in various free activities, such as playing with toys, outside fun, art, water, sand and computer games throughout the day. Planned structured activities are also included in the form of key worker educational group times. These last 15 to 20 minutes and are based on the children’s interests and the term's themes.
After lunch, some of the children rest in a sectioned off quiet area. Each child has their own mattress and blankets, and soft music is played to encourage them to settle. If they do not want to rest, they are able to play in the sensory corner.
Each child has a coat peg which is named and accompanied by a picture which matches their tray. This allows the children to be independent and to fetch their belongings and put them away.
Children do not have to be potty trained to join us as we have nappy changing facilities. Nappies are provided free of charge, but not pull ups. We also have potties and steps to aid the transition.
The parent board shows basic information about the children's day. It shows what they ate, how long they slept for, and other useful information. Staff are also happy to talk to parents at the end of the session about how their child has been through the day.
